Umm...according to the website I believe you have to download Xcode to
to compile that.

OS X is a commercial operating system, and naturally contains
proprietary elements.  I don't necessarily see the point of avoiding
proprietary pieces to compile stuff for it.

Looking at http://darwinbuild.macosforge.org/ , that appears not to have
been updated since 2009.

I'm not all of -core, but I'd guess "no."  See below.

All of _your_ software compiles with just gcc/g++, but some of the
packages in _our_ distribution need xcodebuild, SDKs from Xcode other
than DevSDK, etc.

fink, unlike OS X, is licensed under the GPL.  You're _absolutely_ free
to modify it to use non-Xcode compilers for your own use, if you so
choose.
