Just another data point: I went through this same procedure about a week
ago, but in my case I was trying to build slrn. I got the same kind of
error you did.

I currently need only a handful of packages from fink, and I tried them
all. The simpler ones built and ran just fine, but the ones with
complex, nested components failed miserably and quickly. I too am
patiently awaiting some new procedure to try.
