If you were wondering how protected mode, including V86, works i recommend
reading the official intel manuals. You can find them here:

Written surprisingly understandable and it contains sections of how some of
this stuff is designed to run  msdos. Anyway if you are planning on working
on any of the common DOS protected mode standards then this should give you
a real head start.
