I discovered on an unmodified Tiger iMac that parts of what postfix 
needs/uses can interfere with a standard installation of sendmail.  For 
example the postfix aliases file can cause sendmail to get confused 
about local addresses or complain about protections.  I also noticed 
that my Tiger iMAcs (came with Tiger installed) have the mail files in 
/var/spool/mail with sendmail 8.13.6, but my older PowerBook which began 
with sendmail installed by Apple kept mail in /var/mail.  It took a 
while for me to figure this out.  UW-Imap couldn't see any local mail. 
This may be an effect of changes to the local mail program which 
sendmail does not replace.  I believe I also had to create a user and 
group named smmsp on those iMacs.

What do other distributions of OSes do to make sendmail available when 
it is not installed on a stock system?  Based on how sendmail handles so 
much of its own configuration, it would seem to be the type of program 
for which a porting system might have only instructions and help files.
