I don't know why, but KDE has now started to paste with middle mouse
button as CDE was earlier.  There were a few Sun sourced patches
applied yesterday (with pca) - one related to Xorg, but I thought
the X-server I'm using was completely from Sun.  Maybe it helped, or
maybe there was something wacky with the KDE environment
yesterday.  Biggest issue possibly resolved.
