Just for what it's worth, a quick description of my current setup at 
home. In my office I have a Linux PC and an Ultra 5 connected to a 
Belkin KVM with a Logitech 3 button mouse (no wheel) and everything work 
perfectly. I run Windows under VMWare in Linux. Unfortunately my wife 
tends to hog the office. :-(

In my garage (aka the data centre) I run Solaris, HP-UX, Irix, Linux and 
OpenBSD. There is a 100Mb network connecting all these machines and 
running to the office.

A wireless net connects to my laptop,  a 17" device with quite a lot of 
power (but not too highly portable) that I use most of the time. I have 
tried Linux and Solaris (10 and Open)  on this box and have reluctantly 
gone back to Windows until more hardware drivers appear (or I junk it 
and buy a MacBook). The nice thing though is the installation of 
CygwinX, which gives me a pretty fully featured X server under Windows. 
I am very pleased with this: augmented by PuTTY, it gives me pretty much 
everything I need and I do not notice anything missing. Compared to 
commercial Windows-based X servers, this is far better, being faster, 
more lightweight and of course free. I tried this X server a few years 
back and it seemed a little flaky, but now it appears to be as stable as 
a rock. Of particular interest may be the fact that I usually switch off 
the track pad on the laptop and use a wheel mouse (also Logitech) and 
this works perfectly (paste on clicking the wheel, scroll on rotating 
the wheel).

I realise this is a little off subject, but I thought someone might find 
it useful. :-)
