But look at it as a business would - 50W for two days to compile Perl 5 comes out to 2,400 Watts to compile Perl 5. If my P4 1U server, running at full-tilt at around 120 Watts could compile Perl 5 in les than 1 hour (seems reasonable, though I could be off wildly) on 5% the electricity of the 3/80. With better numbers I could probably get it down to 1% of the 3/80.
But, as many on this list know, it is comforting to to have machines on 24x7, and the P4 server would burn 2-3 times more power than the 3/80 if you kept it on 24x7...
