Could be an excessively picky LCD (for exmaple, it may have a fairly narrow range of vertical sync frequences it's willing to accept, and you never tried any within that range). You don't say what mechanical interface the various monitors are using. If the LCD doesn't accept 13W3, it could be that your adapter isn't putting sync where the LCD wants it (and this doesn't affect the CRT, possibly because the CRT is more tolerant, possibly because the CRT _does_ take 13W3, possibly because you're using a different adapter with it, I don't know). In my rather limited experience, flatscreen displays have Just Worked with the Suns I've tried them with. The only ones I'm certain work are LX onboard cg6s, an SS20 onboard cg14, and an addon cg6 in the SS20 (because those are in service right now). The flatscreens I've tried are Acer AL1716 (I have two, one on the cg14 and the other on one LX), a Viewsonic VA702b (with the SS20's addon cg6), and a Dell whose model number is not at ready hand right now (on the other LX). Everything is running 1280x1024 (I have VSIMMs in the LXes, an 8MB VSIMM in the SS20, and the addon cg6 is a "TGX200,170-0005", which does 1280x1024), but I've tried at least three of them (addon cg6, cg14, and the Dell on the LX) at 1152x900, and in every case everything has Just Worked. There's also an IBM that I think worked with the addon cg6, but I'm not certain (the IBM is being used with peecee hardware right now), and I also don't have that model number at immediate hand, so that's probably not terribly useful information. The Acers and the ViewSonic behave decently (powersave mode) when the host stops feeding them sync. The Dell goes into its "cable is unplugged but monitor is working" display under that circumstance. I haven't found a way to make the LX's cg6 nudge it into powersave, but I haven't looked very hard; I don't know whether it doesn't have a powersave mode, or I just haven't thought to try the right magic, or maybe the LX's onboard cg6 isn't capable of the right magic, or what. The Dell is at work (the LX is mine, the monitor is work's), so I havn't been very motivated to make it work totally spiffily. Annoyingly, none of these flatscreens are capable of textboxing when fed 1152x900 isntead of doing gross-looking scaling - or, at least, if they are I haven't figured out how to make them. All these flatscreens require DE15 video feeds. The 13W3-DE15 adapters I've used have all been "supposed to work with Suns".
