Mary,

I recently acquired an Agave hybrid labeled A. (attenuata x scabra?)
at a nursery in southern California. It is quite different in
appearance from the images referenced so far as Agave 'Edward Hummel'.
Part of the problem may be that most of the Hummel hybrids pictured on
the internet appear to have been grown under cover, and lack the
compact growth of a specimen grown in the open ground. Dry Garden in
nearby Berkeley has one plant of the cultivar known as Agave 'Edward
Hummel' and I'll get a picture this week if I can get over there. The
SoCal (attenuata x scabra?) hybrid I recently acquired has an entirely
different look to it, with thinner, softer leaves, with finely saw
toothed red edges. Images of both to follow in a few days.

Edward Hummel must have been a prolific hybridizer - the nursery where
I obtained the Agave hybrid (also the source of the Berkeley Agave
'Edward Hummel' plant) also had Hummel hybrid Haemanthus albiflos
bulbs for sale. I believe he also worked with fancy Echeveria.

It is entirely possible that because these Agave are hybrids,
divisions of several similar, but not identical siblings could be in
circulation.
