Breck,
I would love to know more about these so-called Hummel hybrids. They are
indeed beautiful and there must have been more than one go at them
because I have seen quite a bit of variation in them. I have two
different clones, they differ only in the color of the leaf (one much
paler than the other). Some are dramatic, with deep green leaves and
red-brown margins.
Culturally, I can tell you that they can take nearly full sun in our
area, in fact I know one that is growing on a south facing wall in a
rock mulched bed and it looks spectacular. Others I know are in the
shade and look equally good. It does appear to be able to take quite a
bit of water if the drainage is excellent, and certainly thrives in rock
mulch. The ones with which I am familiar have only been down to
temperatures around 28, so I don't know much more about its cold
tolerance.
