Neither Pakistani Americans nor Brits of Pakistani origin (nor anyone
else) seem to think so; who am I to argue?

Clearly they aren't racist slurs, and just as clearly "paki" is.

Why too much? And sure it's possible it was just a slip, but since
it's a slip that harms, why not apologize? 

             His remarks

That wouldn't matter, even if there were not millions of Pakistani
American citizens here.
