I am curious, though, why you are "sure" it was "just an accident"?

But, if it were just an accident, why not immediately correct himself?
And, if it were an accident and he didn't realize what he'd said until
later, why not apologize publicly?

The lack of an apology suggests a problem, even if it were an
accidental slip.
