 the 'Dura Ace' 9 speed Bar end shifter set has a ring on it to change
modes index or friction on the right side .

I ran Friction levers for decades ..  then the cogs changed..
 early shifting hyperglide tooth details  are all too willing to shift,
sometimes when you wish it would stay put..

 even with a widely spaced 6 or 7 speed set.
