I would *NOT* suggest the snorkelectomy unless you're willing to put
in some dyno time to get the jetting right and you will find yourself
jetting those carbs like they had pod filters on them (i.e. -
aftermarket needles raised up pretty far). Jack's settings may have
worked well for him, although I'd still like to see his A/F ratio
readings from those dyno runs, but I found a huge lean spot (18:1 A/F
ratio) around 5.5-8K, right around where your mid range is, that
caused me to have to be on the shifter all the time. It packs a wallop
in the places where the A:F is better, tricking the owner into
thinking she has "done something good" with her bike. In the end, it
wasn't worth it. There's a big-a$$ flat spot that is easily felt in
the seat. The type of jetting required to get this to work properly
will cause your bike to get about 30mpg.

After really doing the Pepsi Challenge between various setups (stock
air cleaner + appropriate jetting versus cutting the air cleaner open
so it's like a BMC race filter versus a more "conservative desnork"),
I found that the bike was much better with the snorkel IN. That's
after running it with the air cleaner looking like this:

taping over the hole so that there was approximately the same intake
area as stock but w/o a snorkel and jetting accordingly (which is,
IMHO, a better setup than going with a OEM air cleaner cut back to the
paper).

Dyno run of my bike with a wide open air cleaner and Jack's jetting
recommendations for your amusement. Yes, you get some top end HP but
the jetting recommendation didn't work for me. No, the bike's put
together properly. The tank was shimmed up, like some people suggest,
which may have added to the lean condition or it may have not:
