Re:Icom R2 & Airport Security

Hi Ralph,

I have brought my R2 on all my flights and have never had any problems.
In certain countries they ask to have a look but I just say it's a radio
and
have a few local radio freqs tuned in and they're happy.  It's just the
airports
that have police or military in charge of airport security where you have
to
be careful, especially if scanners are banned in that country (such as
Italy).

As for listening in flight, the official line is that you cannot use a
radio when
the seatbelt sign is lit (ie takeoff and landing) but when it is off you
can,
although it's best to be discreet as some cabin crew and other passengers
get worried when they hear you're listening to the flight deck & ATC.  I
normally tune in the current freq, put the R2 up my sleeve with the speaker
resting in the palm of my hand and give the appearance of resting my head
on my hand!  When the freq changes, I discreetly change the freq and 
continue listening.  Be advised that due to shielding in the plane, you can
hear ATC while on the ground and just after departure but then as you climb
it depends on where the ATC transmitter is as to whether you will hear any
comms from the ground.  You can of course hear the pilot very clearly.
