Hi Patrick, An outdoor antenna is always best, and the higher the better. However, in many cases this is not possible. If you have access to the attic, you can put an outdoor antenna there. The best that I have found is a Diamond Disk-Cone. A disk-cone is great because it has great a SWR spec from about 30MHz to over 1.3Ghz. The height of the antenna itself is about 2.5 to 3 feet, and if the whip antenna is attatched for lower frequencies, it is about 6 feet tall. I put one in the attic for my uncle, and have used them for year myself. Radio Shack has one, but the construction is rather weak, using hollow tubes crimped to small tips with screw threads. This won't be bad for indoor use, but I highly recommend against it for outdoor use. The crimps come loose (from wind movement), which causes intermittent connection to the active, and ground plane elements. I hope this helps. In fact the discussion of the BC-785D and how it works is the only acceptable topic on this list. Any discussion about anything other than the BC-785D is OFF TOPIC. I hope this is clear to all group members..
