As far as I know there is no way to monitor a
frequency without entering it in a channel or using
the search function.

If you had the range of frequencies say
151.000-153.000 already programmed into search, you
could hit search and move to that frequency and press
hold. That is a rather slow process though, and even
slower if you didn't have it already programmed.

The best option is to reserve a channel in your
scanner, I use the last channel in the scanner (1000
in the case of the 785D) and just immediatly switch to
that channel and program it in..basically:

hold
1000
hold
152.500
Enter
