Ignore that that post about the airband and AM mode.. I had airband on
the brain that day. I agree with Dave, start at your antenna and work
your way to the radio... 

save some time and try out a rubber duck and see what happens.. then
go the route Dave talked about. sounds like an antenna connection is
bad somewhere

Every year in the spring I check out all my outdoor connections and
re-do anything that looks like it might be on the way out. Beware of
the old Ham trick,, somebody could have inserted a straight pin into
your coax outside and that is shorting it out. cant spot that. Could
have a kink somwhere too that caused a short
