I've compared a fully extended Miracle Whip with and without
a shorting lead between whip and coax centre connector (i.e.
with the Miracle Whip circuitry either out of or in circuit).
On an FT-817, there was significant improvement in signal
strength when the short was removed and the antenna peaked
for the frequency in use. The improvement was substantial,
typically 8 or 9 S-points! The same level of improvement was
seen using the VR-500 instead of the FT-817, making make
barely readable signals fully copiable. Having said that, a
fully extended miracle whip is rather unwieldy on a VR-500.
Much better would be an equivalent length of wire and the
Miracle Ducker or similar.
