The VR-500 senses the presence of the rechargeable pack through contact of the metal finger at the bottom right of the battery compartment with the exposed lower casing of the cell closest to the bottom. It is possible to enable charging of any AA rechargeables by removing a "window" of insulation from one of the cells and allowing it's metal casing to make contact with the sense terminal.

ONLY if I am doing extended QSOs or net control, is there any indication that I'm running the battery down. Since I run the rig maybe an hour a day, I have 23 hours at 30 ma to recharge, which seems more than sufficient.
