I'll have to revisit my Active Duck. The main limitation I found with it was that with its antenna being so short, the unit had to be held in an optimal reception spot in the room in order to get enough signal to be able to amplify. At times it gave good reception, but often I was a bit disappointed. I think I remember having to wind a wire spiral of several turns around its antenna, the bottom of the spiral being connected to the ground side of the BNC, in order to cure interference on the 27 MHz band. I think I was getting overload of some sort there, possibly from broadcast stations.

Hi Chuck,

Interesting. I actually HAVE the instructions. I should read them more
closely. You are correct, they call for a Duracell MN21 or Eveready A23.
12 whole volts. So maybe the FET just fried due to normal FET flakiness.

I was reading the call-out for the N battery from the battery
compartment on mine. Grove must've used what was cheap. So I can relax
and pat myself on the back for not toasting mine in a fit of grad school
numbskulledness. Ignore where it says N in the battery holder, A23 is A-OK.

But now we seem to have a way of addressing the strong dose of
amplification that running on 12 volts gives the user. By golly, it is
strong, too, now I remember that.

But it was working on 1.5 volts, too! More gently, to be sure, but
perhaps better in some circumstances. And if it works at both ends of of
that voltage span, should work in between if I can find a battery of the
right form factor for maybe 6 volts?

Yep, the Duck isn't perfect, but it is a nice option to have. Made some
great catches on it back in the day. Things are quieter on shortwave now
and I'm just relearning my keystrokes and shortcuts with the VR-500, but
it's still a fun little receiver with a little pracrtice and experimenting.
