I have found that this has much more to do with the radio than the antenna. I used a Dressler ARA30 active antenna for many years with an Icom R8500 DC-to-blue light scanner for HF listening with zero problems in downtown Philadelphia and before that with a RF Systems DX-1 active antenna albeit in a much more benign RF conditions in Western England. The VR5000 crumpled under the same conditions and did so with a few feet of wire. I sent it straight back for a refund. Same with the AOR AR8600. These receivers just don't do well at HF.
