The problem isnt that it dont hear, it hear too much.

 

I have been trying different antennas on my VR-5000, I use it 99% for HF ACARS and the rest VHF ACARS and listening to air traffic.

Started with a 70 meters/229.6 feet longwire and it was mostly screaming because of overload. I heard the stations I was looking for but the noise level was very high.

 

After that I tried a homemade vertical antena and it worked OK, but was deaf on 8 MHz.

 

The last antenna I have tried is my discone for 0-1300 MHz and it works better than I could dream of.

I have positions from South America to Australia almost daily on it, and I live in Sweden, so it looks like its a very good antenna for a VR-5000.

The noise is almost gone and the signals are very clear.

Signals could be a litte louder but then I guess the noise come too, and the radio dont need many dB before it decode.

 

Its a great radio and with this antenna it do an amazing job, the people that complain about the radio havent found the right antenna I believe.

I have found that this has much more to do with the radio than the antenna.

I used a Dressler ARA30 active antenna for many years with an Icom R8500 DC-to-blue light scanner for HF listening with zero problems in downtown Philadelphia and before that with a RF Systems DX-1 active antenna albeit in a much more benign RF conditions in Western England.

The VR5000 crumpled under the same conditions and did so with a few feet of wire. I sent it straight back for a refund. Same with the AOR AR8600. These receivers just don't do well at HF.
