no receive on am

hello ive got a problem on my vr-5000, i can receive fm stations on my receiver, but nothing on am. ive changed antenna locations and also coax. which makes me think it maybe bad coax. but why would i be able to recieve fm stations and not am.   any suggestions   ki4awz
