I recommend the VR5000. I have owned both the AOR 8600 MKII and more recently, the VR5000. The major negative with buying wideband radios is usually the HF portion is easily overloaded, and is the case with both the AOR and VR5000. I use a MFJ-956 Preselector for LW/BCB/HF preselection and it solves the problem, relatively cheaply as well.

A few reasons why I prefer the VR5000 over the 8600

1) Much better audio performance - good wide range bass and treble response and a Tone control to boot to adjust as you like. Makes SW stations much more readable than the AOR
2) Smaller SSB step size (20hz, vs 50hz for AOR) means you can tune AM/SW stations in ECSS and they don't sound 'warbly' as on the AOR (ECSS is a poor but substantial substitute for sync detection, which neither offer)
3) Better alphanumeric Memories - easier to read
4) DSP Option (well worth the money)
5) RF Tune option (VHF & up only but valuable)

Leonard :)

Subject: [YaesuVR-5000] A few questions

I now realise the VR5000 is a discontinued product, not mentioned my my dealer.. Is that a problem, is support and warranty still OK?
The dealer is still trying to move me onto an AOR 8600Mk2, Is there any one here who has used both and can give a impression on each? There seems little else in this price bracket for a wide band receiver.

Many thanks
