Boeing plans to test a fuel cell-powered airplane in late-2004 or early-2005. Masterflex AG has been awarded a contract from Airbus Deutschland GmbH for the development and construction of a fuel cell system for use in commercial aircraft. Yamaha Motor Company has developed a fuel cell for motorcycles, becoming the world's first major motorcycle maker to create such a device. The fuel cell is powered by methanol and measures about 40 centimeters square. In other news, Yamaha and battery maker Yuasa Corporation will jointly develop fuel cells for 50 cubic centimeter (cc)-class motor scooters. Honda Motor Company has delivered an FCX fuel cell vehicle to Japanese hydrogen manufacturer Iwatani International Corporation during a ceremony at a hydrogen fueling station in Tokyo earlier this month. Iwatani will pay approximately 800,000 yen (about $6,700) per month to lease the FCX, which will primarily be used for promotional events. =20 Hydrogenics and Enova to Work on Fuel Cell Bus for Air Force. Phase III improvements to the Electric Fuel Zinc-Air fuel cell zero-emission bus include the design, installation and bench testing of a new ultracapacitor and controller. The two companies will lever Nagase's expertise as a technology and intelligence oriented trading company to deploy Palcan's fuel cells to Japanese markets. The California Fuel Cell Partnership will continue its collaborative work to encourage fuel cell vehicle commercialization through 2007. The group's original charter called for joint activities through 2003. An interim status report by NASA's Mishap Investigation Board (MIB) indicates the Helios Prototype appeared to have experienced "undamped pitch oscillations" which led to a partial breakup of the aircraft at 3,000 feet. The fuel cell system had not yet been turned on when the mishap occurred. Students and faculty in Suffolk's physics department are completing the first setup and test phase of a project to gauge how well all the pieces of their customized fuel cell system work together. Fuel Cell Technologies Ltd. (FCT) has signed an expanded Joint Development Agreement with Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation. Millennium Cell Inc. has been awarded U.S. Patent number 6,586,563 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a process for making sodium borohydride, a key component in the Millennium Cell Hydrogen on Demand(tm) fuel system. The University of Regina (UR) in Saskatchewan has joined with HTC Hydrogen Thermochem Corporation to initiate a $480,000, three-year project aimed at developing a cost-effective way of producing hydrogen from natural gas for use as an alternative vehicle fuel. =20 FUEL CELL COMPONENTS =20 Hoku and SANYO Join on MEAs. Hoku Scientific, Inc. has formed a joint development relationship with SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. The focus of the development effort is a new membrane electrode assembly (MEA) technology for use in SANYO's proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The MEA will incorporate SANYO electrode technology and the Hoku membrane.
