NASA Awards Contract for Aircraft Fuel Cell.=20

NASA/Glenn Research Center has awarded a $524,999 contract to Advanced
Technology Products of Worcester, Massachusetts, for design and
fabrication of a fuel cell power system for a high-performance composite
electric propelled aircraft.

Boeing Announces Plans to Test Fuel Cell-Powered Aircraft.

Boeing plans to test a fuel cell-powered airplane in late-2004 or
early-2005. The project will be led by Boeing's Research and Technology
Center in Madrid, Spain, with partners including Advanced Technology
Products, Diamond Aircraft, Sener, and Aerlyper.

Masterflex Wins Airbus Contract.

Masterflex AG has been awarded a contract from Airbus Deutschland GmbH
for the development and construction of a fuel cell system for use in
commercial aircraft.  Masterflex plans to launch its first
hydrogen-powered fuel cell, which will initially be used as a power
source for mobile office equipment, for series production next year.

Yamaha Develops Fuel Cell for Motorcycles, Scooters.

Yamaha Motor Company has developed a fuel cell for motorcycles, becoming
the world's first major motorcycle maker to create such a device.  The
fuel cell is powered by methanol and measures about 40 centimeters
square.  In other news, Yamaha and battery maker Yuasa Corporation will
jointly develop fuel cells for 50 cubic centimeter (cc)-class motor
scooters.  A prototype reached 40 kilometers per hour [about 25 mph],
with an output of 500 watts, which is generally equal to the performance
of standard 50-cc scooters.

Honda Delivers FCX to Iwatani.

Honda Motor Company has delivered an FCX fuel cell vehicle to Japanese
hydrogen manufacturer Iwatani International Corporation during a
ceremony at a hydrogen fueling station in Tokyo earlier this month.
Iwatani will pay approximately 800,000 yen (about $6,700) per month to
lease the FCX, which will primarily be used for promotional events.

Hydrogenics and Enova to Work on Fuel Cell Bus for Air Force.

Hydrogenics and Enova Systems received funding from the State of
Hawaii's High Technology Development Corporation to develop and
integrate a fuel cell bus to be stationed at the Hickam Air Force Base

Arotech Completes First Milestone of Phase III Electric Bus Program.

Arotech Corporation's Electric Fuel subsidiary has completed the first
milestone in Phase III of the FTA-supported Electric Bus program, which
will continue with the bus performance tests during the summer.  Phase
III improvements to the Electric Fuel Zinc-Air fuel cell zero-emission
bus include the design, installation and bench testing of a new
ultracapacitor and controller. Electric Fuel has also completed the
preparation of zinc anodes for the test drives, scheduled to take place
in upstate New York later this summer.

HydroGen3 Begins FedEx Deliveries.

FedEx and GM have officially launched the first commercial test of a
fuel cell vehicle in Japan with the first packages delivered to a Showa
Shell Sekiyu K.K. and Le Meridien Grand Pacific Hotel Tokyo in GM's
HydroGen3 fuel cell vehicle.  The two companies are collaborating on a
one-year test program in which FedEx will operate the HydroGen3 on its
regular delivery routes in Tokyo.

Palcan and Nagase Enter Marketing Agreement.

Palcan Fuel Cells has entered a joint marketing agreement with Nagase &
Co., Ltd. of Japan to distribute fuel cell stacks and systems for the
Japanese marketplace.  The two companies will lever Nagase's expertise
as a technology and intelligence oriented trading company to deploy
Palcan's fuel cells to Japanese markets. Palcan's fuel cell is aimed
directly at low output applications such as personal transport NEV and
fleet type vehicles used in close-range environments (airports,
amusement parks, golf courses, malls, delivery circuits), two and three
wheeled scooters, in addition to including stationary, marine and
portable power applications.

CaFCP Signs on for Four More Years.

The California Fuel Cell Partnership will continue its collaborative
work to encourage fuel cell vehicle commercialization through 2007. The
group's original charter called for joint activities through 2003.
During the next four years, CaFCP plans to facilitate the placement of
fuel cell passenger cars operating within the state, primarily focused
in the greater Los Angeles region and the San Francisco-Sacramento
corridor, while fuel cell-powered buses will operate in regular, daily
revenue service in at least three transit districts.

NASA Investigation Into Crash of Helios Continues.

An interim status report by NASA's Mishap Investigation Board (MIB)
indicates the Helios Prototype appeared to have experienced "undamped
pitch oscillations" which led to a partial breakup of the aircraft at
3,000 feet. The fuel cell system had not yet been turned on when the
mishap occurred. The MIB's final report is due by September 30, 2003.

Plug Power Introduces Propane-Fueled System.

Plug Power Inc. introduced the GenSys(tm)5P, its first liquid propane
gas (LPG) fueled product.  The GenSys(tm)5P, a 5-kilowatt, grid-parallel
fuel cell system, is being marketed to an audience that includes rural
electric cooperatives, customers that have no utility-provided
electricity supply, and federal and state government customers who
require the remote fuel capability that LPG provides. The first two
GenSys(tm)5P systems have already been shipped.

Suffolk University Begins H2 Generation/Fuel Cell Demo.

With the support of Linde Gas and Proton Energy Systems,  Suffolk
University's Frank Sagan Energy Research Laboratory now has an
integrated system for on-site production and safe storage of hydrogen
for a 60-watt fuel cell.  Students and faculty in Suffolk's physics
department are completing the first setup and test phase of a project to
gauge how well all the pieces of their customized fuel cell system work
together. The knowledge gained will provide a springboard to the
school's large-scale plan - a wind and photovoltaics-powered hydrogen
generator to fuel hydrogen-based power systems - at the university's
Friedman Field Station in Edmunds, Maine.=20=20



FCT and Siemens Expand Development Agreement.

Fuel Cell Technologies Ltd. (FCT) has signed an expanded Joint
Development Agreement with Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation. This
agreement relates to the next generation 5-kilowatt product and covers a

RWE AG is joining with MTU, a DaimlerChrysler AG company and FuelCell

Institute.

Headwaters Incorporated and the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics
(DICP) of the Peoples Republic of China have formed a fuel cell
technology development and commercialization joint venture.  The new
partnership will develop and plans to market fuel cell nanocatalysts,
fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies, fuel cell systems and other
related electronic devices. Initial focus will be on direct alcohol fuel

MTI Micro Fuel Cells received an award of $41,000 from New York State's

Fuel Cell Technologies has installed a pilot VOC reformer and SOFC
system at the Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Assembly Plant, to transform
waste gases into energy.  The pilot system consumes emissions from
Ford's vehicle paint shop and turns them into electrical energy and heat
for the facility.

Millennium Cell Receives Patent.

Millennium Cell Inc. has been awarded U.S. Patent number 6,586,563 by
the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a process for making sodium
borohydride, a key component in the Millennium Cell Hydrogen on
Demand(tm) fuel system. The patent relates to a process for the
synthesis of sodium borohydride using more readily available metal salts
rather than metallic sodium used in the current commercial process.

UR and HTC Hydrogen Thermochem Join on Project.

The University of Regina (UR) in Saskatchewan has joined with HTC
Hydrogen Thermochem Corporation to initiate a $480,000, three-year
project aimed at developing a cost-effective way of producing hydrogen
from natural gas for use as an alternative vehicle fuel.

Hoku and SANYO Join on MEAs.

Hoku Scientific, Inc. has formed a joint development relationship with
SANYO Electric Co., Ltd.  The focus of the development effort is a new
membrane electrode assembly (MEA) technology for use in SANYO's proton
exchange membrane fuel cell. The MEA will incorporate SANYO electrode
technology and the Hoku membrane.  The joint development relationship is
planned for the next 18 months and includes the financial, service and
technical contributions of both companies, totaling more than $6

New Catalyst Could Provide Cheaper Hydrogen Production.

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin at Madison have developed a
hydrogen-making catalyst from nickel, tin and aluminum, which is used in
a process called aqueous-phase reforming, to convert plant byproducts to
hydrogen. The team is now collaborating with scientists at Virent Energy
Systems in Wisconsin as part of a National Science Foundation Small
Business Technology Transfer grant to develop catalysts for generating
fuels from biomass.

The Department of Energy has issued its solicitation for research in
several specific hydrogen production and delivery technologies. Key

and Hydrogen Production Infrastructure Analysis. Total cumulative DOE

California.=20

South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an RFP soliciting
bids for hydrogen infrastructure and also for hydrogen ICE
demonstrations.  The RFP would support conversion of vehicles from
natural gas, gasoline or diesel, and seeks proposals for hydrogen
fueling stations in Burbank, Ontario, Riverside, Santa Ana, and Santa

TACOM Issues Solicitation for Fuel Cell Sources.

The U.S. Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) is seeking a
self-contained fuel cell system to power the Omni-Directional Inspection

PA DEP, Agriculture Launch $5 Million Initiative to Fund Clean Energy

Pennsylvania's Departments of Environmental Protection and Agriculture
announced a $5 million initiative to finance the implementation of clean

funding include proposals to use biomass as fuel, and taking advantage

DOE has issued its "Grand Challenge" for Basic and Applied Research in

The Department of Energy has announced the selection of 13 firms and
educational institutions to receive $75 million in cost-shared awards to
fund new research in fuel cells for vehicles, buildings and other

million in awards for hydrogen storage, production, and sensor
technologies.

Danish Breakthrough in PEM Fuel Cells.

Danish Power Systems has developed a PEM fuel cell stack system for
automotive applications and stationary power, which increases operating
temperature by a factor of two. Based on a new material for the

ATP Funding Awarded to Fuel Cell Projects.

Fuel cell projects received $6.3 million in funding through the
Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology
Advanced Technology Program (ATP) Awards.  Funding was awarded to TIAX
(solid oxide fuel cells), Virent Energy Systems LLC (renewable hydrogen
production), and Motorola Inc. and Englehard Corp. (development of a

DOE SBIR Awards Fund Several Fuel Cell, Hydrogen Projects.

DOE's Office of Science granted SBIR/STTR awards to 17 fuel cell and
hydrogen projects through its 2003 solicitation. Projects include
development of SOFC insulation materials, a new membrane technology for
the separation of hydrogen from coal syngas, and a technology to
accelerate the screening of new families of potential fuel cell
catalysts.

Minority Universities Receive Fuel Cell, Hydrogen Project Funding.

Two of the seven awardees for the Historically Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCU) grant research program solicitation proposed
projects for hydrogen and fuel cell research. Clark Atlanta University
received $200,000 for a project to determine the feasibility of
producing hydrogen from coal and/or biomass, while also sequestering
carbon. Southern University and A&M College received $200,000 for a
project to improve the materials used in SOFCs to increase their
efficiency and lower production costs.

Illinois Launches Public-Private Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Partnership.

The Illinois Coalition and Illinois' Department of Commerce & Economic
