TOUR DE SPORTIssue #12March 9, 2006By James
Raiawww.ByJamesRaia.com[1]---------------------PUBLISHER'S
GREETING---------------------The Tour of California has been over for nea=
rly
two weeks, and from most accounts the inaugural race from San Francisco t=
o
Redondo Beach was a success. Racing was fast. The field was diverse. The
crowds were strong, and the cyclists en masse seemed to enjoy racing alon=
g
the coast of California. Congratulations to race organizers. It was great=
to
be there. One suggestion I can offer for 2007: AEG, the race owners,
shouldn'ttry so hard. Each day, spokespeople from the race "spun" flowing
press releases, replete with seemingly embellished attendance figures. The
approach isn't new. Organizers of many mainstream sporting events (with
paying spectators) find creative ways to announce attendance figures.
Cyclingevent crowds are impossible to count. So when race officials
annnounced crowd sizes each day and then compared the collective totals t=
o
the World Series it was the proverbial "apples vs. oranges" comparison.Sa=
nta
Rosa, the concluding city for Stage 1, put on an impressive show. And oth=
er
cities did well, too. But the public and media can see through public
relations stuff pretty easily. What surprised me is the number of media
outlets that printed the PR material verbatim.I've posted two articles ab=

Best/Worst Bicycling Cities: Davis, Calif., has been named the country's
bestsmall city (population of under 50,000) for cycling, according to
Bicycling Magazine (March, 2006).Portland, Ore., retained its standing as
thebest overall cycling city in the country after also receiving the top
honor in the magazine's last rankings in 2001. Portland was also named be=
