XML-RPC newbie: Why 'Opening of HTTP request failed'?

Hi

I am new to XML-RPC. I am trying to use a third party Javascript, 
running under IE7, to access an application running on an Apache 
server, via XML-RPC. The Javascript is stored on my local PC. The 
server is on another machine in our company network.

The original author of the Javascript claims that  it works only with 
Safari and 'doesn't work in Firefox or IE, due to security and other
issues, all fixable'. We are a PC-only house so don't have Safari. 
Therefore, I'm trying to get the script to work with either IE7 or
Firefox 1.5. However, the script works with neither currently. The 
script raises an exception having the message:

RequestOpenFailed [module 'urllib' version: 1.1.3] Opening of HTTP 
request failed.

I am using the jsolait library to provide XML-RPC facilities to the 
Javascript.

I know that the server application correctly responds to XML-RPC 
messages because I have tested it with another app written in Java 
which runs using Webstart from the server app's vendor's site.

Please can anyone suggest what may cause 'Opening of HTTP request 
failed' and how I can fix it?
