Personally, I don't care much for WYSIWYG word processors, period. As an
author I don't want to know anything about typesetting, styles and such;
there are trained professionals to do that. I am perfectly happy with a
good text editor (emacs, vi, etc) and LaTeX. For those who prefer
something less extreme, but share my sentiment on typesetting, there is
always LyX. Both generate professionally typeset, perfectly portable PDFs.

That said, among WYSIWYG office suites, OpenOffice is truly remarkable.
>From its quirky beginnings as StarDivision's StarOffice, it has evolved
gracefully. In some aspects it still lags behind M$ Office, but I hope
that version 3, due out in a few months, will up the ante on its
competition from Redmond. I think that OOo greatest strength is
multi-platform availability and support for multitude of languages.
As for it's quirks.... what software package does not have them.
