The Sympatico trademark may be owned by Bell Canada, but it is shared by
various members of the Stentor group. Many of the older trademarks are,
even though the Stentor group is waning in power.

Regardless, Bell Canada has farmed out its entire email service to
Hotmail, much like Rogers has done for Yahoo. I don't know what the
behind the scenes deal was, but clearly both parties benefit. One gets
additional 'webmail' clients, the other no longer has to support
incompetent, lazy tech support people.

Clearly as an IT person I do not feel that tech support people are lazy
and incompetent, merely that the Bell and/or Rogers tech support people
are. This could easily by corporate culture issues in these companies.
Heck, I know for a *fact* that Bell has *serious* issues with corporate
culture right now.

The concepts of customer service, uptime, and fighting for new clients,
are foreign concepts to most Bell employees.

Anyhow, while unions can be quite good, they can also be quite bad. It
all depends upon the union, etc. Bell's union has been a horrid bane for
it, with absurd benefits, insane holidays, and horrid measures required
to discipline lazy/ineffective employees.

So, how do you fix this? Outsource! The cost is off your shoulder, and
since Hotmail/Yahoo want more signups, these companies are likely to
charge little or nothing to Bell/Rogers for the same. Now you have 15 or
20 fewer mail servers, and knowing the quality of Bell tech support
people, about 10000 fewer techs to manage the same servers that a team of
2 or 3 could handle 24x7 in the real world...

Of course, this doesn't even touch on other massive issues with Bell.
Current upper management fossils, with no concept of the high tech
marketplace, how it is changing, and how to compete.

Ah well.
