A newbie cludge, perhaps, is to login as a user, open a terminal, su, and then invoke the GUI application you want to run as root? My very recent move from F10 to F11 (using the DVD ISO) was pure Hell. I ended up saving user files to an external USB drive and installing F11 onto bare metal.
