RE: [UG-ADMINS] Hello from the Northwest Ohio PUG

Meetup has been great for Baltimore.  It gives us exposure to a pretty large
group of people.  At each meeting we have the usual suspects, but there is
almost always a few new people that pop in to see what's going on.  Some of
the members have told me that they never used Google Groups and only found
the Baltimore PHP group through meetup.  I'm sure that can go both ways
though.  Meetup isn't free for organizers either, which could turn newer
groups off from using it initially.

We just recently started using Google Groups in attempts to get discussions
going outside of the user group meetings.  DC's list is fairly active and
we're aspiring to accomplish similar activity.  Meetup isn't great in this
department, at least in my opinion.

We moved to Google Groups at the beginning of March 2009. When we moved, we 
scrubbed our list of inactives... and it dropped from 250 to ~120. Since
then, 
we've had *crazy* growth and we're pushing 400 subs now.

In spite of all of that, we never had a Meetup Group. As a result of the tek

Community Session, one of our guys - Sandy Smith (@SandyS1) - started the 
Meetup Group and we got *5* new people at our Beverage Subgroup last week.
We 
don't have longterm data yet, but *holy crap*.. I wish we'd done that two 
years ago when we started cleaning things up.
