We're a bit more strict at DallasPHP. We confine job ads to the meetup discussion board. Back when our email list-serv was more active people complained about the excessive number of job posts so we cordoned them off to a separate list-serv. 

We get a lot of contacts from recruiters asking us to distribute job listings for them, typically those emails get trash binned.

We do occasionally get a recruiter asking how to find people and what we allow them to do and those emails we answer: You may post your job ad to our discussion board, and you are more than welcome to show up in person and talk in person/hand out flyers in person. 


At one meeting a recruiter dropped off a stack of flyers with the security desk in the building we use. Someone walked the flyers up to us and said "these were left at the front desk for you". I promptly threw a 1/4" stack of flyers in the trash.


The key lesson I've drawn is two-fold: #1 our members come to unwind and socialize with peers and mentors, not get bombarded with job ads, and #2 when we give recruitment agencies an inch, they take a mile. Job ads should be an OPT-IN experience and we isolate accordingly.

I've thought about implementing a pre-meeting job list announcement but the more I deal with non-Lonnie recruiters the less inclined I am to do so as maybe only 10% have ever bothered to show up in person.


I'm not bitter...
