You will take on the development and evolution of their current reporting system, which: *Maintains a separate reporting database, built from the live databases and other sources; *Generates regular reports (daily, weekly, monthly) in various formats and mails them to interested parties; *Provides a dashboard summary which is displayed on a plasma screen in the office, to give everyone awareness of live service; *Will provide web interface for viewing reports, and signing up for report delivery. The reporting system is built in Perl and runs on Linux. It uses the Template Toolkit and various other Perl modules from CPAN. Your responsibilities will include: *Working with people around the business on clarifying requirements for new reports. *Identification of new reports that will give insight into business operations, customer behaviour, system performance, etc. *Evolve existing reports as the system changes, and the data model evolves. *Bespoke one-off reports, as needed. Required skills: *Good software engineering skills. *Strong Perl programmer, with 4+ years development experience. *Modern web page standards, including XML, HTML, Javascript, CSS, etc. *Database design and programming, particularly for PostgreSQL and MySQL. *CVS, or familiarity with a similar revision control system. Desired skills: *Reporting experience. *Good data modelling skills. *SOAP, both client and server. *More advanced & emerging web technologies, such as XSLT, XPATH, XUL, etc. *Experienced with agile methods, in particular automated testing and refactoring. *Apache familiar with configuration; for example comfortable setting up vhosts. *Experienced at developing resilient high-availability systems. *A degree in computer science, maths, physics, or numerate degree. *Have worked in a start-up environment.
