I wouldn't tell them to switch to GMail, or any other big provider
they'd be tied to. I'd tell them to register domains that they can host
elsewhere (on a big provider if they want) so they can switch providers
if/when needed. Similarly, many users are stuck with ISPs they dislike
because that's where their email address is hosted.

DMARC is just one example of how an email provider can do something that
makes some people unhappy. People need to be able to "vote with their feet".
